Summer Survival Part 1: Beach Week

It’s officially summer! Which means the weather is nice, and all you want to do is lay out at the beach and enjoy some fun in the sun!

Below are 3 quick and easy tips to help you enjoy your time with family and friends while on your Beach Week!

#1 Be food prepared!

Summer vacation and travel doesn’t mean you need to completely throw out your diet and all of the hard work you’ve accomplished so far! Spending all day at the beach doesn’t mean you need to be in a bind when it comes to food! Remember, most Airbnbs and vacation homes have a full kitchen with a fridge, stove, oven, and microwave. Take advantage of this! When you arrive, stop by the local grocery store to stock up on food for breakfast, lunch, and snacks. Vegetables, fruit, trail mix, lunch deli meat, wraps, and water are all easy to pack and snack on when lounging in the sand. By preparing everything in the kitchen before you leave for the day, you can ensure that your kids have the healthy snacks that they are used to at home. The worst thing is being stranded on the beach with no food or snacks! The goal is not to be perfect when it comes to eating while on vacation, but rather to make the best food choices while avoiding the junk food.

#2 Pack your workout!

A jump rope and resistance band take up little to no space in your suitcase. And they can fit into your running shoes! If you are staying near the beach, take your resistance band to do lateral banded walks and jumping air squats in the sand. If the house you are staying at has a driveway, mix in some jump rope and push-ups to get your heart rate jumping and your muscles pumping! Grab your running shoes and see the sights of the town by running on the boardwalk. It does not need to be complicated. Working out, and doing workouts you normally wouldn’t do, is supposed to be fun!

It’s VACATION. I will allow myself to relax, enjoy, and be still! For me, being on vacation means being on vacation. It’s a much needed break in my typically regimented day-to-day. And I embrace it. I sleep in if I want (or even go back to sleep if my body tries to stay on schedule!). I take the week to rest and allow my body to recover without guilt or anxiety. If I feel the need to move, I do so in a different manner like beach yoga, or morning/evening walks on the beach. Better yet, I’ll treat my body to a massage!

Wake up early! If I am planning to workout while on vacation, I try to get it done first thing in the morning! I either wake up early and find an affiliate to drop-in to, or I hit the road or beach for an early morning run. For me, it doesn’t matter what I do, as long as I do something active. Knocking out my workout first thing allows me to have a more relaxed approach to the day so I can have fun with my family and friends.
